From an advertising point of view, a tag is a piece of code that is inserted into the source code of a web page where an advertisement is to be displayed. Therefore, when a visitor visits a web page, the tag is what makes it possible to request and activate the ad on that same page.
In other words, the advertising tag is a few lines of code that instructs a visitor's browser to display an ad on a web page.
